CTF Loader process (or ctfmon.exe) usually runs in the background and the user isn’t even aware of that. However, the easiest way to check whether the process is present or not is to open up the Task Manager and take a look there. Interestingly, the process often bounces back and forth between being visible and invisible. Some people might experience performance issues because of it, while others might be simply bothered by it. The main issue for the latter group of people is that they don’t know what the process is or what it does. Furthermore, that can lead to frustration, and the users might think that their system’s been compromised.
CTF loader process refers to the Collaborative Translation Framework. As its name suggests, it’s a process that enables text support for speech recognition and handwriting functions. The ctfmon.exe is a generally useful file because it provides support for various Office programs. For example, it offers alternative ways of typing and adds new functions to the Office Language Bar. However, the process constantly keeps on working in the background which concerns many users. If the process causes high CPU or memory usage, it can affect the performance of other programs which might be in use.
The are two ways of looking at the CTF loader process. The first one is positive, and the other one is negative. The presence of the process would be justified if the user was using the handwriting or speech recognition modes. In that case, the process would have to be active because it would be providing different functions for those modes.
On the other hand, if the user isn’t using any of the relevant modes, then something’s not right. Therefore, the process becomes a nuisance, and it needs to be addressed and removed.
Before we move on to discussing three available methods to deal with the issue, we’d like to offer some advice and tips to our readers.
Before deciding what to do about the CTF Loader, it might be a good idea to try any of the following tips. They might prove to be as equally effective as any of the solutions that we’ll mention a bit later.
Revert to the Older Build of Windows
If the CTF Loader process keeps appearing in the Task Manager and keeps slowing down the computer. With this in mind, it might be a good idea to revert to the previous Windows build. The process usually comes with one of the newer updates, and if the user can revert to the build before it, that could solve the issue. In order to revert to the older build, here’s what you need to do:
- Press the Windows key.
- Navigate to Settings.
- Choose Update & Security.
- Click on Recovery.
- Select Get Started.
- Click on Go back to the previous version of Windows 10.
Delete the File Manually
The users can also try to navigate to the location of the .exe file and delete it manually. Who knows, there’s always a possibility that it fixes the problem. Here’s how to do that:
- Navigate to C:\Windows\System32 (or C:\Windows\SysWOW64)
- Simply select the file if you see it and delete it.
Alternatively, the user can use the Windows key + E button to search for all .exe files in the computer. The deletion process is roughly the same once the file is found. Anyway, let’s move on to the actual methods of solving the CTF loader issue.
Disabling the Touch Keyboard and Handwriting Panel
The first possible fix that comes to our minds is to disable the touch keyboard and handwriting panel. People who are sure that they won’t use these features can freely disable them. Therefore, there’s nothing that will require the CTF loader process to be active. In order to disable them, follow these steps:
- Press the Windows key + R button on the keyboard.
- Type services.msc into the dialogue box.
- Press Enter.
- Find the Touch Keyboard and Handwriting panel service.
- Double-click the service and navigate to the Startup type drop-down menu.
- Expand the menu and click on Disabled.
- Select Apply and confirm with OK.
There are a couple of drawbacks to using this method. For example, the users might start receiving warnings about the CTF loader process. In addition, the ‘type to search’ functions might not be working properly. If that is too much of a problem, the user can always revert the setting and re-enable the service. However, there are other methods here as well.
Using Task Scheduler
The Task Scheduler is an extremely useful tool to have when it comes to managing the services. For example, there’s no need to disable the entire process, just its timing.
- Press the Windows key + R button at the same time.
- Type ‘taskschd.msc’ in the dialogue box.
- Hit Enter.
- Double-click on the Task Scheduler Library.
- Expand the Microsoft folder.
- Expand the Windows folder.
- Choose TextServicesFramework.
- Right-click on MsCtfMonitor.
- Select Disable.
Scanning the Computer
Malware is what causes 90% of the problems nowadays. We think that it’s a good idea to get a hold of some reliable antivirus and antimalware software and scan the computer. We’d like to recommend Malwarebytes, as it seems to be the most reliable software so far.
